A charity trip is one whose sole purpose is to raise money, through sponsorship and corporate funding, for a chosen charity or a group of charities, depending on the origins of the group.
It is established at the start that the cost of such a trip is the responsibility of the individual taking part and that the recipient of any sponsorship is the charity.
Once a group is established, usually 9 months to a year before departure, a training programme is devised which will best help the group achieve their physical goal, whether it be climbing a peak or completing a linear journey. Their motivation for setting themselves a challenge is to support a charity close to their heart and to raise as much money as they possibly can. Some fundraising can be done as a group through quiz nights, skittle evenings etc., which also has the effect of strengthening the team.
In 2010 a group of a dozen travelled to Turkey to climb Mt. Ararat on behalf of Noah’s Ark Trust and raised £15,500. A similar amount was raised by another group journeying down the River Wye, from Source to Sea.
Previous charity trips include:
- Trekking in Morocco (St. Richard’s Hospice)
- Climbing Kilimanjaro (Noah’s Ark Trust).
