The Himalayan Trust UK is very committed, working in the more remote parts of Taplejung District, ensuring there is improved educational and health provision for the mountain communities living in the shadow of the world’s third highest mountain, Kangchenjunga.
The purpose of this trip is to specifically visit Lelep School. This school has made excellent progress in recent years but has one area of concern for us. On site, there is a girls’ hostel for as many as 30 girls between the ages of 9 and 16. We have concerns that both the level of care out of school hours and the toilet and washing facilities fall short of our expectations. These matters are in hand and this is an opportunity to see what progress is being made.
At the same time we have a volunteer working in the school, particularly looking into the care of the girls. and this will give us a chance to encourage both the school and the community to take more responsibility to ensure that the girls are properly supervised and looked after. In addition, new toilet and washing facilities are being built and this is going to be linked to a need for improved menstrual education, provision and understanding. For further information, please refer to the attached PDF at the foot of this page.
Whilst at Lelep, we will be able to visit a number of schools within the vicinity, including those in the Hellok Valley and Lungthung, a school that suffered more than most in the 2015 earthquake. Visiting these schools will give us an opportunity to monitor their educational progress, the on-going improvement of teaching methods and how they are best using their facilities. Schools appreciate these visits from HTUK as it shows that we care.
This is not a particularly arduous trip as there is only about four days where we will be doing any significant walking.
