Iceland has a stunning landscape, a mixture of volcanically crafted mountains brushed with vivid strokes of green moss, gouged by violent, white rivers and topped with glimmering icecaps. The harshness of the environment means it is sparsely populated once you are away from the towns. (The population of Iceland is 320,000, about the same as Coventry!) The trek took us through areas of typical Icelandic scenery with thermal fields sending sulphurous steam into the air. across volcanic deserts to the lush Porsmork valley, before crossing the recently erupted Eyjafjallajökull, which grounded the world’s airlines in 2010.
With a spare day in Reykjavik at the end of the itinerary it gave us the flexibility to enjoy some of the delights of the world’s most northerly capitol city, including a chance to go whale watching or visiting the colonies of puffin.
