This was an exciting and challenging expedition which got up close and personal with the northern, Chinese, side of K2. The challenge was its remoteness. Flying into Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, we travelled overland to the Chinese border and on to the city of Kashgar, a modern Chinese city on the edge of the Telemaken Desert. Heading further south,driving along gradually deteriorating roads, took us to the start of out trek at Yilik. For the next sixteen days we were in one of the remotest places on the planet, not seeing another living soul, wading across icy rivers, climbing over high passes and staring in awe at the stunningly beautiful scenery. On the seventh day we reached the Chinese Base Camp, our springboard for exploring the K2 North Valley up towards Advanced Base Camp, right under the massive north face of K2. We returned to Yilik by the same route, but in deteriorating weather over the Aghil Pass, to pick up our vehicles and drive over several days back to Bishkek, where we were able to spend a little R&R time before returning to the UK.
