India 2011

Location: Ladakh, NW India

Duration: 28 days

Group size: 19 students & 5 Staff

Arriving in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, we spent time acclimatising while working at Druk White Lotus School, severely damaged in the landslides and floods last year.  The focus of our efforts was on repairing and painting the adventure playground and repairing broken classroom furniture. The trek was a high altitude journey linking the Indus Valley and Lake Tsomoriri.  Day three saw us crossing the Kangmaru La, a pass of 5150m and descending to the high altitude pasture at Nimaling.  Over the next 10 days we crossed another nine passes, all hovering around the 5000m mark before reaching the stunningly beautiful Lake Tsomoriri.  In the village of Korzok, on the lake’s shore, we were able to give funds to the project we set up in 2006 enabling children to attend the Nomadic School at Puga, 40km away.  Returning to Delhi, we then travelled to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, and then Varanassi, the holy Hindu city on the banks of the mighty Ganges.
