Georgia is a fascinating country full of history. Tbilisi has a mix of architecture ranging from the ruins of the Narikala Fortress through to ultra-modern steel and glass structures. It is a city of art and culture, with many influences having shaped it the way we see it today. As a country it has had a turbulent history with neighbouring giants to the north and south, as well as its own internal feuds. When a Georgian was asked what made him proud to be a Georgian, he replied, “We have survived.” It is also a country of mountainous beauty with the Caucasus  rising above 5000m to the north. Add to that good food and wine, Georgia is a great place for intrigued travellers to visit.

Our journey starts in Tbilisi where we just have time to see the highlights of the city before venturing north. It will not take us long to reach the stunning Caucasus Mountains, and we should get glimpses of Kazbegi, Georgia’s third highest mountain rising to 5047m. One of the highlights of this first day will be visiting Gergeti Church, perched high on a promontory with a backdrop of mountain wall.

The itinerary, not only shows us the best this area has to offer in terms of mountain scenery, but also opens a door into the lives of the people. We stay in family run accommodation, see behind the scenes as as our hosts demonstrate the art of dumpling making. On another occasion we will see how felt is produced and how it is turned into items of use as well as for artistic purposes.

We will be among the first of the year to visit Juta, cut off for six months because of snow. Spring flowers should be beginning to show as the earth warms up. From Juta we have the opportunity to climb a nearby peak that will give us outstanding views of the high Caucasus. This will be the grand finale of our trek before beginning the journey back to Tbilisi. En route we will be stopping off to visit the two UNESCO World heritage sites of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery.

After a celebratory meal in Tbilisi, it will be an early start for our return to the UK the following day.
